Chapter 23

Village Improvements

Arthur walked over to the plot of land in question and looked around. There wasn’t much in the area to get in his way, and the land was relatively flat. His mind started turning over the potential issues in building new-style buildings. He wanted something that mixed in modern amenities that he was used to, but he needed to accomplish them in a way that used magic from this world.

The problem of lighting was one he wasn’t too concerned about. There was surely a way he could make rechargeable lights with his Enchantment skill. His Dimensional Disposal spell would be used to create a toilet in this place. That would also be a fairly simple task since he already knew the required spell. All he needed to do for that scenario was to make an activation panel of some kind that would power an enchantment to open the disposal portal and close it.

The part he wanted the most, which would also be the most challenging, was running water. The village used water from wells around the area. Coming up with a plumbing system would be a challenge, but if he planned to grow this village into something grand, it was absolutely necessary. Since they were trying to rebuild from the ground up, this was the perfect chance to start.

His access to Water Magic would allow him to create an enchantment to keep the water flowing. He already did that with the bathhouse filter. The piping itself was different. They didn’t have nearly enough metal of any kind to make the plumbing system out of that. It also had the nasty side effect of rusting and corroding. The idea of making clay pipes came to him, but he knew of no body of water close enough that may harbor a deposit of clay near it.

This left him with only one proper choice, stone. It wasn’t the best idea, but the Romans had a fantastic system using stone aqueducts. He didn’t want to rely on an above-ground water system, though. With his access to Earth Magic, he should be able to create a solid system of stone tunnels under the ground and run them to and from the well to the houses and businesses.

A look across the village showed him the well in regard to his current location. It was a good hundred yards away, so he walked over to it. He kneeled to the ground and placed his hand in direct contact with the dirt near the well. Pushing his Earth Magic downward, he searched for the water. It took some time, but he finally brushed up against the water around the one hundred and fifty feet mark. He extended his senses another twenty feet lower, so he wasn’t directly on the surface, and molded out a stone tunnel parallel with the well shaft. It took time to create the hollow space and then to solidify it into stone. After the first twenty feet were complete, the process sped up.
